Also, when it was created, most appliances were earthed. Nowadays, most things one plugs in are small electronic devices which don’t need an earth. Type G/BS1363 has no 2-pin variant, and even mandates a mechanical shutter to prevent a plug without an earth pin from being used. Which was great in 1947, but not so much now, when Europeans, Americans, Japanese, Australians and such have slender 2-pin plugs and economical sockets to put them in, while the Brits/Irish/HK/UAE are stuck with their enormous clownshoe of a plug.

Type G only exists because the British skimped on wiring after WW2 and needed to put a fuse in each plug for safety, hence the chonkiness.

It’s the same in Sweden, which suggests it’s either an EU-wide standard or informally standardised (perhaps thanks to IKEA’s economies of scale).

The UK is presumably different because the Inselaffen like things being in round numbers of inches and they didn’t vote Leave to have 140cm double beds.

The next logical step would be to genetically engineer out the parts that make it an animal: the digestive tract and most of the brain and nervous system, ending up with spherical meat-fruit that grow on a chicken tree plumbed into a nutrient feed.

I don’t remember which one, but apparently the question of whether the genetics of a species define its nature for religious reasons is where Judaism and Islam diverge. One would hold that, if no actual pigs were involved, a potato with pig genes is just a potato and thus allowed, and the other would hold that the pig genes make it sufficiently porcine to be forbidden.

Apparently if someone genetically engineered a potato with pig genes (to make it extra tasty when roasted, presumably), it would be one but not the other, due to philosophical differences between Judaism and Islam.
