Well, yeah.

You can pay migrants low wages for less expensive food, or you can pay high wages to any citizens willing to work that hard for expensive food. This is not a new dilemma, red states in the US have tried multiple times to outlaw migrant farm labor and replace it with prison labor or other types of labor, and it has only resulted in several seasons’ worth of crops rotting in the fields.
Personally, I’d want the labor to be compensated fairly with benefits and proper wages, but then I don’t manage a farm and I don’t buy expensive food.
A conservative media push revealed to have russian origins?
Hm. How unusual.
Good job Canada!
I understand. It was particularly galling to me that they doubled down on the report after the initial backlash on it. It came out after that that they hadn’t used the Ukranian teams to write it and had interviewed POWs in russian detention for source references which is inherently problematic for a couple of reasons.
This Wikipedia entry neatly summarizes a lot of the criticisms at the time and AI’s response which was weak, to say the least. Because of the incredibly tense nature of the active war in Ukraine and how this report would obviously be interpreted, plus the effective doubling-down AI chose to follow the report with - I just can’t with them anymore.
It’s a shame, I supported them for decades, but. They really fucked up.
It’s a shame I have zero trust or respect for Amnesty International these days. I’d bet there’s something to this story. But I won’t hear it from AI.
You mean people trying to get to the airport?
I wish they could figure out a better strategy than making people hate them.

No doubt about that!
While I agree, you still have to reckon with those individuals who claim to be conservative, vote accordingly and are then deprived of rights or services by obvious function of that vote and continue to be conservative, denying that it happened or pretending that it didn’t.
At that point it’s not an ideology or a value. It’s a brand. A cult. They just are. That’s what many of them are in the US these days. If there was a straight-forward motion to ensconce one of their so-called values into law, and a ‘conservative leader’ called for it to be downvoted, it would be. That’s because they don’t really have ideals.
India’s been on the fence a lot. Politically.
Well that’s the danger - the conservatives here went full mask-off racist poor-haters which wasn’t as much of a surprise as their unbelievable lack of belief in anything.
No ideology, values, or any other mechanism holds them - not even science, which they pretend to believe in, when it suits them. The so-called ‘adults’ in the party have succumbed utterly to the cult. There are no rational leaders, only figureheads and capos.
It’s shameful and beyond pathetic, and I’d like to think Canada would never fall to such insanity, but the mechanism by which it was carried out (facebook, twitter, Qanon, convoys, right-wing news) are all the same. More power to you progressive Canadians. Hopefully you can weather it.
As a filthy American, it’s sad to see standard-issue republiQan Southern Red State rhetoric in Canada. You guys deserve better.
Indeed it is!
